Netflix is starting to bring it's first series into their fold.  Hopefully, there will be more to come. Beginning in 2012 they will be streaming a new series called "House of Cards" with Kevin Spacey in the lead role.

The series follows Spacey's charactar through the underside of British politics as he sets his sights on the top job.  Executive producer of the series will be David Fincher ("The Social Network", "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button").

While Netflix is not producing the series they are licensing it ahead of production and will first be seen on Netflix.

This could be the first hit series to make video streaming from the Internet popular and broaden online a la carte programming.  We're looking forward to this development.

Promote Thyself

Ann Powers in an interesting article from  "The Record" at NPR Music.details how some bands and singer/songwriters are promoting themselves.

"Singer-songwriters like Waller, who funds his career partly through grants and by working in theater, can find audiences now without having to fit into a style that suits a corporate (or even indie) marketing team. It's not easy to handle your own tour booking and album distribution, but artists who take on those duties rule their own creative lives. For them, South by Southwest is not a dog and pony show but a chance to cultivate new partnerships."

Bad Kids Go To Hell

Currently casting for this film "Bad Kids Go To Hell" the producers are leaving the decision up to us.  The cast will be selected by online suggestions.

Created and written by Barry "Bazza" Wernick and Matthew Spradlin.  Originally they came up with an idea for a movie but at the time there was a writer's strike going on.  They were unable to pitch the movie to anyone because of the writer's strike.  Then someone suggested it would make a cool comic book.

So they learned the process of creating and publishing a graphic novel.    The first issue sold out in a week and the complete novel sold out in a day.   Now a live action movie is being shot in Austin and at Spiderwood Studios.

They signed up with Antarctic Press to publish the series which enabled them to keep all the publishing and movie rights after the first print run.

Check out Bad Kids Go To Hell: The Movie on Facebook and vote for the cast at You Cast the Movie.

day in the life: lunch money

That's right.  YouTube is paying producers for videos through their partner program.  By allowing advertisements to be displayed with the video or by offering content available for rental through video streaming, content providers can share in the revenue.

The key to qualifying for the partner program is having original work. You must own or have express permission to use and monetize any audio and video content you publish in order to qualify.  For instance, no cover songs for a music video or concerts that you don't own the rights to..  Background music must be created or owned by you

Videos are streamed using the highest quality possible, upt to 1080p HD with a 16:9 aspect ratio.  Long form videos are acceptable with no limit on size or length.

YouTube provides a toolkit that includes:

  • Views Report displays trends for a particular video.
  • Discovery Report shows how people discovered your video.
  • Demographics Report  displays information about your viewers.
  • Subscribers Report gives you net change in subscriptions by country.
  • Community Report shows how engaged your  users are by rating your videos, commenting on them, or favoriting them.
  • Hot Spots shows which scenes in your video that are hot (people are rewinding to watch again) or cold (people are leaving the video).
