While looking up other things I ran across this...

A video of Earl Scruggs and friends playing on the David Letterman Show.  Earl Scruggs is a legend in country music. Some of you might remember it was Earl and Lester Flatts that wrote the theme song for The Beverly Hillbillies show. Earl has deep Carolina roots. He was born in Shelby, North Carolina and was raised in Boiling Springs, North Carolina which is right on the border of North and South Carolina near Charlotte.

Earl and Lester won a Grammy award in in 1969 for Foggy Mountain Breakdown and they were inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1985.  In 2003 Earl received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Earl also received a Grammy for Foggy Mountain Breakdown in 2002.  The recording made in 2001 featured Steve Martin on second banjo, Vince Gill and Albert Lee on guitar, Paul Shaffer on piano, Leon Russell on organ and Marty Stuart on mandolin.

While I'm still just hoping that a theater in my area will be playing Tree of Life soon, Todd McCarthy of The Hollywood Reporter has composed an incredible review of the film, just after its premiere at Cannes

This fifth feature in Terrence Malick's eccentric four-decade career is a beauteous creation that ponders the imponderables, asks the questions that religious and thoughtful people have posed for millennia and provokes expansive philosophical musings along with intense personal introspection.

An independent film The Cain Complex is casting for non union actors in Austin, Texas.  This feature length movie will start filming in early July .  You will receive pay and film credits.  Meals provided.

  • [RICK] Male; Caucasian; Early 40\'s; A hard bitten menacing man. Strong but not fit (potbellied.) His face has the haggard, beaten look of a hard-core drug abuser. He could have tattoo\'s and facial hair, long or short hair. His teeth, smoker\'s ochre he tends to have cigarette burning in hand most of time.
  • [NIKKI-LYNN] Female; Caucasian; Late 30\'s - 40\'s; Rick\'s wife/woman she also has a harsh look of a bitter long term drug abuser, and constant smoker. She is edgy and sinister, skin veiny, almost emaciated, tattooed, completely street trash looking woman. She can have long hair but it would be unkempt and kept tied back in ratty pony tail.
  • [TJ] Male; Caucasian; mid-teens; A soft neglected kid son of Nikki-Lynn (Rick\'s step son), he is considerably overweight he has never participated in any wholesome outdoor or athletic activities growing up in a negligent depraved environment. He stuffs junk food watching TV as his main activity. He has a hollow lost look that could indicate mental deficiency, though still he is hardened by the hopelessness his upbringing. This is a featured role and will be treated as a day player. His death is the catalyst that escalates the police confrontation.
  • [CASH] Male; Caucasian; 20\'s; oldest son of Nikki-Lynn (Rick\'s step son), Completely muscular and \'cut\' from jailhouse workouts, with tattoos of firearms and wings on his arms and neck. He is hard core and menacing, there is no question he is dangerous especially so due to his desperation.
  • [ANGEL/WOMAN] Female, 30\'s; Ethereal, nice figure on the slim side and is completely nude. The nudity is not sexual in any way. Preferable would be long hair, and light in color but not necessary. The actor will need to be able to be oblivious to her nudity. (This is a very interesting character, we just don\'t know whether she is protagonist or antagonist) (Think Tilda Swinton for look, White Witch, Chronicles of Narnia)
  • [PAULY] Male; Caucasian; Mid 30\'s; A disheveled, bed-headed bear of a man.
  • [POLICE CAPTAIN] Male, any ethnicity, early 40\'s.

Here's a great new site to watch films on. is an Internet channel for films that's sort of like TV but it also has channels for on demand viewing.  When your first go there and click on "Watch Now" you are in the middle of whatever is on at the time.

Move the cursor to the bottom of the screen and get a menu that shows you what's currently playing and what's up next.  You can rate the film, share it on Twitter or Facebook, and send the filmmaker a message.  If you want more information just click on "Find out more" and it brings up the Interactive Programme Guide

The Interactive Programme Guide gives you plenty of information about the film such as synopsis, director, producer, production date, etc... You can also search for a film and watch it on demand.  A submit link is there for filmmakers to submit films.  Filmmakers can sell DVDs, soundtracks, and merchandise from the site too.

I've seen several good films there since I signed on and am looking forward to seeing more as this site matures.

Try it.  You'll like it.:

1968 ... '2001' director Stanley Kubrick

Director Stanley Kubrick (Photo by  James Vaughan via Wikipedia)

It is the 40th anniversary of the movie A Clockwork Orange by Stanley Kubrick.   One of my favorite films as well as director, it is based on a film adaptation of Anthony Burgess's novel of the same name.

Malcolm McDowell plays the lead role as a psychopathic thug with a band of droogs that commit hateful vicious crimes in an English city of the not too distant future.  In this social satire McDowell's character, Alex, goes from crime spree, to capture, then to a most unusual rehabilitation.

A Clockwork Orange has stood the test of time and is still one of Kubrick's best works.

Other notable films by Stanley Kubrick:
1960 Spartacus
1962 Lolita
1964 Dr. Strangelove or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
1968 2001 A Space Odyssey
1980 The Shining
1987 Full Metal Jacket
1999 Eyes Wide Shut

Chris Hemsworth at 2010 Comic-Con International

Chris Hemsworth at Comic-con (Photo by Ronald Woan Image via Wikipedia)

No matter how much Bridesmaids tried, there was just no way to take the box office crown from Thor just yet.  The latest installment in the super hero genre, starring Chris Hemsworth, added $37.4 million to its earnings, bring it to to $119.5 million to date.  With a budget of $150M though, it still has a way to go.

Bridesmaids, a film produced and written by its start Kristen Wiig along with Judd Apatow was able to tap into a large comedy audience and came through with an impressive $26.2M opening.  The film's R rating doesn't seem to be hindering its success any.  It is full of raunchy comedy, hilarious gags, and a great chemistry between stars and Saturday Night Live alums Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph

Glass Moon - On a Carousel

Anyone remember Glass Moon?

Back in the 80s there was local club that often had a band I liked to see.  The band's name was Glass Moon. I remember them most distinctly because they could play Yes songs note for note and I was a big Yes fan.

I also remember they were from Raleigh, North Carolina.  One day, as I was riding down the road,  the radio announcer introduced a song by Glass Moon called Carousel.  Didn't really fit with the performances they gave at the club but I was happy they had a song on the radio.  It was a remake of The Hollies song by the same name. Turns out it did pretty well on the charts for what I considered a local band.

Ran across this article today: Return to Comboland - Glass Moon which tells a bit about how the song was recorded at  Electric Lady Studios in New York.  Also how the filmmaker who did their video on a small budget and no profit, took what he learned from the experience to  major label projects he did in the 80s and 90s.

Every once in a while, something will come along that grabs my attention and refuses to let it go.  Right now, that's The Tree of Life.  I stumbled across the trailer the other day and became enthralled in it.  There is no speaking in the trailer, no attempt to explain what's going on at all, which makes it all the more intriguing.  Director Terrence Malick has been keeping the details of this film secret for quite a while.  It was shot in Texas 3 years ago with a budget of $6 million.  It will focus on the life of Jack and his attempt to find his way through life.  Brad Pitt, Sean Penn, and Jessica Chastain star in the film premiering this week at Cannes and then on May 27 in the US.

Review: Water For Elephants

Actress Reese Witherspoon in the Oval Office o...

Reese Witherspoon (Public Domain Image via Wikipedia)

Aside from my fascination with the circus and the early 1900's, I had no real interest in seeing Water For Elephants.  As it turned out, I had a free ticket, and I'm still counting down the minutes until Super 8 comes out, so I needed something to occupy my time.  The film, based on the Sara Gruen novel of the same name, starts off with an old man (Hal Holbrook) recounting stories from his youth and one of the "most famous circus disasters of all time."

Jacob Jankowski, played by Robert Pattinson, is suddenly orphaned and hops aboard a passing train hoping to find work and a new life.  The train he chooses is a part of the Benzini Brothers traveling circus, where he is able to find work in the midst of the Depression.  As a veterinary student, he's given the opportunity to work with the animals, and in turn, work with Marlena (Reese Witherspoon), the star performer who is also married to August (Christoph Waltz), the man who runs the business. The developing love triangle is the focal point of the film. Jacob thinks he is the better man, and August's rage is proving that to be true.  Their fight to win the love of Marlena creates genuine emotions for these characters.  The chemistry between Robert Pattinson and Reese Witherspoon is often weak and a little forced, but the incredible acting of Christoph Waltz carries the movie.

The next superhero franchise has been cemented.  Thor easily grabbed the box office crown this weekend with $66 million.  This brought the Marvel Studios film to a worldwide total of $242 million.  Thor failed to beat Iron Man's previous opening weekend totals, but did out-perform the openings of X-Men, Fantastic Four, and The HulkThor's 3D and Imax release, as well as the overall rise in ticket prices  may have given it a boost.

Fast Five, the fifth installment in the Fast and the Furious franchise, came in 2nd bringing its total to $184.8 million internationally.

Amazon Studios

Amazon Studios is a groundbreaking opportunity for writers and filmmakers to get their scripts and movies in the hands of Hollywood executives.  Through monthly contests, they will be awarding more than $2 million this year alone.

For the month of May, the contests will be as follows:
Best Test Movie- $100,000
Best Dialogue Track- $10,000
Best Script- $20,000
Best Comedy Script- $20,000
The Best Comedy Script category will be judged with the help of Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman.

A "test movie" should be a full-length movie.  The film doesn't have to be completely fine-tuned.  Amazon Studios will be focusing on good acting, excellent sound/music, creativity, and the ability to capture the feeling of the script on film.

The deadline for contests will be the last day of every month.  Not only are you entering your work into a contest, but you're giving the entire film community a chance to view your projects and offer feedback.  So, even if you aren't a writer or filmmaker, sign up anyway!  Movie fans are welcome to comment on uploaded scripts and videos.

Some of the best films submitted will be screened by Warner Brothers executives, thanks to a first-look deal Amazon Studios has made with them.  The filmmaker will also get a meeting with execs to pitch their ideas.

Check out all uploaded projects, last month's contest winners, and detailed guidelines for future contests here:

's Abraham Lincoln biopic has just added Tommy Lee Jones, as congressman Thaddeus Stevens and Joseph Gordon-Levitt as the President's eldest son, Robert Todd Lincoln to the cast.  Daniel Day Lewis and Sally Field will portray Abraham Lincoln and wife Mary Todd.  The film is slated for release in late 2012 and will shoot this Fall in Virginia.

Universal has backed out of the Guillermo del Toro adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's At The Mountain Of Madness.  In an interview with Deadline, del Toro discussed the news, saying that he thinks that the film's R rating coupled with no definite commitment from Tom Cruise, the proposed star of the film, led to Universal's quick change of heart on the project.  Del Toro fans shouldn't be too upset though, as he's already begun production on his next film, Pacific Rim, an apocalyptic movie set in the future.

blogRJohnson2[1].jpg Robert Johnson was not the first player of early delta blues but he certainly has to be the most famous.

Leaving behind a catalog of 29 recorded songs, a couple of photos, and little else, he is also one of the most mysterious.

The story is he wasn't that good of a guitar player according to his friends. Then he disappeared for a while and when he returned he had mastered the delta blues.  Legend has it he went down to the crossroads and sold his soul to the devil to be able to play that way.

Art Imitates Life

Saw this documentary last night about Mark Hogancamp who was attacked outside a bar one evening and left him in a coma for 9 days.  He lost most memories of his previous life.  A heavy drinker before he no longer has any desire for alcohol and has to ask people what he was like before the attack.

For his self-created therapy he built a 1/6th scale town called Marwencol in his backyard complete with characters from his real-life town to fill it.  This  therapy was to help him with the hand-eye coordination he had lost.  It became an obsession.

He began using dolls in his town that he would name after his friends and acquaintances.  After receiving a new doll he washes the chemicals out of the hair and puts back in his own to make the hair look as natural as possible for the person he is creating the character after.  After dressing them he gives the new character it's name.

He began animating the dolls in the town and photographing each scene of a storyline, usually of the good guys battling the German SS.  The photos look very realistic.

Mostly only a his friends knew about this.  One day, the maker of the documentary, Jeff Malmberg saw out of his window a man walking down the road pulling a toy Jeep.  After seeing this occur a few more times he engaged Mark in a conversation about the Jeep and dolls.  Mark took Jeff to show him his town and the boxes and boxes of photos that he had.of the goings-on in the town

Subsequently Mark's photos were discovered to have an artistic value and he has to face his fear of going to the city and showing his work.
