This weekend the box office saw the premiere of the latest Pixar film, Cars 2. This sequel focuses more on Mater (Larry the Cable Guy), as he and Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) compete in an international race and get caught up in a secret mission.  The movie got mostly negative reviews, strange for Pixar who has proven over time to be one of the most groundbreaking studios in Hollywood. Despite that, the film grossed $66.1M during its debut weekend.

Bad Teacher, a raunchy comedy starring Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel, opened with  $31.6M carrying it to the number two spot.

Falling 66%, Green Lantern made only $18M, bringing its two week total $89M.  The comic book film, while one of the most advertised of the summer, has proven to be one of the dullest.

Tips For Professional Musicians In Today's Economy

by Kristy Angley Marett

In the current sluggish economy, more and more performing artists seem to be landing fewer and fewer gigs. How can we stay afloat in a sinking market? Whether your band is a full-time or part-time act, agent-represented or independent, there are things you can do to help strengthen your position in the market place.

These days, talent alone is simply not enough. The acts who make it through these difficult times will be the ones who adapt to the industry's environment. Along with talent, necessary ingredients for continued success are patience, adaptability, a positive outlook, and of course, a solid marketing strategy.

The Filmmaking Formula

A while back I stumbled across, a site created by director Peter D. Marshall, who worked on films like Dawn of the Dead and The Butterfly Effect.  The site is dedicated to providing advice and tips for independent filmmakers.  One article in particular gives a sort of "Filmmaking Formula" to guide young directors to success.  In it, Marshall says studying human behavior is the first big step.

"The good thing about human behavior is that it is observable, and as storytellers, we must first observe the way people react to different situations and circumstances in order to understand how and why their behavior changes.

He goes on to say that once you understand these things, you will "have the knowledge to better understand the story you are telling, and you will feel more confident helping your actors achieve believable performances. "

Read the rest of the article here and see what other steps Marshall thinks are key to creating a successful movie.

Cast of Green Lantern (Photo by rwoan via Wikipedia)

The summer of comic book movies continues with The Green Lantern nabbing the top spot at the box office this weekend.  Despite an overwhelming majority of negative reviews, fans flocked to see the film that starred Ryan Reynolds as a young pilot granted superpowers and Blake Lively as his love interest.   Its opening weekend pulled in $53.2M, a softer opening than Marvel's Thor got earlier this summer, but a solid opening none-the-less.

Super 8, the sci-fi flick set in 1979, still showing high numbers with $21.5M, bring its two week total to $73M.

Jim Carrey's Mr. Popper's Penguins
opened this week with only $18.5M.  The family friendly movie follows a businessman who's apartment is being overrun by penguins.  With poor reviews, and a dismal opening weekend, this film will have to work hard to pas its $55M budget.

JK Rowling Has A New Project

JK Rowling has consistently proven herself to have a great understanding of her fans and what to do to keep them entertained, and she's proven that several times this week alone.  Fans of Harry Potter already had enough to be excited about this summer.  The final movie, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 is coming out on July 15, bringing an end to the franchise we've all grown to love.  In case that wasn't enough though, JK Rowling has something else up her sleeve.  Earlier this week she began a secret online campaign that involved finding 10 coordinates.  After putting these coordinates in a search bar on  Each coordinate gave you a letter, and after unscrambling the letters, fans were left with POTTERMORE.  Rowling has given little information about what this is supposed to mean.

Visiting simply takes you to a screen with the words 'coming soon.'
The next part of the puzzle consisted of a Youtube video that is currently counting down the minutes until Rowling makes the announcement.  Keep track of that here:

On top of all that, the final trailer for the film was released this week with several never-before-seen scenes.

Whether you're an actor or a filmmaker there will come a time when you need a demo reel.  Showing off your best work is a great way to land a job.  Making a demo reel is also a way for filmmakers and actors to lean on each other for help.

Say you're making a film but have no budget.  Offering a demo reel to an actor just starting out may make the difference in getting them to work on your project for little or no pay.  For an actor that's new to the business asking a filmmaker to help with a demo reel in exchange for work on their next film is a good bargaining tool on two counts, you get a demo reel, and some experience in a film.

Sometimes the you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours approach is the best way to get to know and network among people in your area that are working on films.  Who knows maybe later on you'll run across each other again when there's real money and fame on the table.

Entertainers and musical groups fall into this bucket too.  Nothing better to show how you look and sound to a venue operator or organizer of an event, when you're looking to get their approval for you next gig.

Here are a couple of links that give some good tips for putting together a demo reel.

Animated films have always been some of my favorites over the years, and the collaboration between Disney and Pixar over the past 15 years has taken animation to a new level.  Their feature films and short films have gotten worldwide acclaim.  I was looking up some of those short films on their website when I saw a new part that hadn't caught my eye before.  The How We Do It section takes you through the process of creating a feature length film.  Anyone looking to get into animation or CGI could learn much from the creative minds at Pixar.

Check out the website to read behind-the-scenes information on some of their most popular films like Toy Story and Cars, as well as watch theatrical trailers, learn about the artists, and look for job openings or internship opportunities.

Zach Galifinakis in The Hangover (Public Domain Image via Wikipedia)

Super 8 debuted in the top spot after months of unique marketing.  The Steven Spielberg produced film follows a group of kids in 1979 that unintentionally capture a horrific train crash on camera and try to figure out the details of the accident.  JJ Abrams made sure little was known about the plot, and it looks like that drove movie-goers to the theater.  The film pulled in $35.5 million in its opening weekend.

The newest installment in the X-Men franchise is turning out to be another summer blockbuster.  With $24.1 million, X-Men: First Class, based on the Marvel comic book series brought its total so far to $98 million.

Zach Galifinakis, Bradley Cooper, and Ed Helms should get ready for another sequel.  The success of The Hangover Part II has the series poised for yet another hilarious movie about the threesome.  After making $17.7 million this weekend, the film has now grossed $215.7 million, exceeding all expectations.

Review: Super 8

Steven Spielberg 1999

Steven Spielberg (Public Domain Image via Wikipedia)

The speculation around Super 8 made me almost as excited as the actual premise.  I went to a midnight showing on Thursday expecting Spielberg fans to be lined up out the door.  What I got instead, was a theater of about 10 people.  Granted, Steven Spielberg did not direct this movie; JJ Abrams did.  As it progresses, that fact becomes unavoidable.  The film starts by giving you the information that Joe Lamb (played by Joel Courtney) has just lost his mother in an accident and that his father, a police officer in the small town of Lillian, Ohio is now having to step up and take care of him on his own, whether is prepared to do that or not.  Then we follow Joe and his friends, all perfectly cast, as they film a zombie movie to try and submit to a film contest.  They witness a train crash and have to spend the rest of the movie figuring what or who is behind it and why strange things are happening in their town.  Dogs and people are disappearing, whole counties are without power, and no one seems to have any answers.  The plot itself is pure 1980's Spielberg.  It feels like the Goonies or ET, and that was always its selling point.  However, once you're watching the movie you quickly see that those things are all it really has- it feels like ET or the Goonies, but it certainly is not.

One of the main things you need to do is operate as a business.  Don't mix business and personal funds, receipts, etc...  Open a separate bank account for your business.  Show that you are making some profit or intend to.

James Arness 1923 - 2011

James Arness passed away today at his home in Brentwood, California; the actor was 88 years old.  Arness, the older brother of Mission Impossible star Peter Graves, is widely considered a legend of television.   From 1955 - 1975, he played Marshal Matt Dillon in one of the longest running shows in TV history, Gunsmoke.  Five Gunsmoke movies followed in the 1980's and 1990's.  As well as being a staple in the western genre, the show also saw notable guest stars like Burt Reynolds and Jon Voight.  John Wayne had been previously offered the role but turned it down, suggesting James instead.  He offered up some encouraging words, saying "Go ahead and take it, Jim... Make your mark on television."

Old Courthouse Theater in Concord, North Carolina is holding auditions June 13th and 14th for On Golden Pond.

  • Norman Thayer, Jr.- 79, White haired. Walks slowly but upright. Boyish and peppery, holding onto his vigor and humor but at same time grand and has a manner, a way of speaking and of carrying himself.
  • Retired college professor now having memory problems. Married to Ethel.
  • Ethel Thayer- Still pretty at 69. Married to Norman. Energetic beyond belief. Norman's opposite in many ways. She fills the empty spaces when he grows quiet. She knows how to manage his moods and run interference when he's less than charming and with others.
  • Charlie Martin- He's a big, round man, weather beaten face, smiling eyes, strong Maine accent. He is indeed a laugher, but not exactly "deficient". In his rustic, simple, thoughtful way, he is actually quite charming.  He is the local postman on the lake.
  • Chelsea Thayer Wayne - Daughter of Norman and Ethel Thayer. Pretty if perhaps the tiniest bit heavy, athletic and tan but with a nervous edginess to her, and plenty of her father's humor.
  • Billy Ray- He is 13, short and flippant, but only to cover his awkwardness. He is eager and bright, his hair long, his posture terrible. Bill Ray's son. Chelsea's new step son.
  • Bill Ray- Attractive and well dressed, a tad self-serious but with a good sense of humor when he remembers to use it. A dentist. Chelsea's new husband. Billy Ray's father.

Monday, June 13th and Tuesday, June14th
7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Transformers: Dark of the Moon- Part 3 in the Transformers franchise, early reviews are calling it the best of the series.  Transformers 2 has most fans (including myself) very skeptical but hopefully Michael Bay will not let us down this time.  In this installment, the Autobots must beat the Decepticons to a lost ship on the moon.
Director: Michael Bay
Starring: Shia LaBeouf, Rosie Huntington-Whitely, Josh Duhamel

July 15
Winnie the Pooh- Pixar has taken over the animation field, but the fact that Winnie the Pooh is completely traditional animation is very refreshing.  The movie will follow Pooh in the Hundred Acre Wood.  On a search for honey, he gets captured by another creature, and it's up to the rest of the gang to save him.
Director: Stephen Anderson, Don Hall
Starring: Jim Cummings, John Cleese, Craig Ferguson

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Pt. 2- "It all ends." Harry and Voldemort come head to head during the final battle at Hogwarts.  For 12 years, every other thought in my head has been about this series, and now we'll see the end.  After watching it 5 or 10 times in the theater, I may leave for long enough to write a review.
Director: David Yates
Starring: Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint
