Film Set (Image by Nasib Bitar ia Wikipedia)

I ran across this article from InsideHollywood.Info that has some tips on becoming an extra.  The best part of the article is the descriptions of the movie terms you will hear on set.

Getting to know these is both interesting and helpful.  It walks you through the steps at the beginning of a scene and takes you through to the wrap explaining what you will hear, who will say it,  and the key people on the set to keep an eye on for direction.  Knowing this, you will not seem as green as you otherwise may be.

Got a message from my friend Chad Campbell.

"Working on the 8th Annual Kona Surf Film Festival! Psyched. we've teamed with the Mauna Lani Bay Hotel and Bungalows for the fest which has moved outdoors.. Dec. 2nd and 3rd,  2011 on the Big Island.. send your movies, come hang out, or sponsor it!  this year supporting the Seathos Foundation...... check the sites its gonna be sick!"

Indeed it does sound like the ideal way to hold a surf film festival.  Outdoors and in Hawaii.

Chad founded the festival in 2003 with help from his friends and family.  A filmmaker/editor/producer himself and a lover of all things surf.  He has several several movies to his credit such as Blueprint (2002), Searching for the Haj (2004), Seasons (2005), Zampa (2007), and the film that started it all and was awarded Surfer Magazine's Video of the Year, The 5th Symphony Document.

He is also known as Splinta in the music world for the surf bum rap and hip hop music he produces. Coming soon will be an interview Chad has with film-making legend Bruce Brown, directed by Chris Malloy and shot by Scott Soens for the Surfer's Journal.

While looking up other things I ran across this graph at InformationIsBeautiful.com  It shows the amount of sales you must have of various media in order to make a U.S. monthly minimum wage of $1,160.

For instance if you sell 143 self pressed CDs at $9.99 you can clear a profit of about $1,160.  If you sell the same CD at cdBaby it is almost as good as it only takes 155 CDs sold to make the same amount of money.  Selling the allbum for download on iTunes is a different story.  It will take 1,229 downloads to net the minimum wage.  Even that is better than the retail CD with a low end royalty deal which requires you to sell 3,871 CDs to hit the minimum wage level.

Next come the online streaming services like Rhapsody, last.fm, and Spotify where the user streams the music from the cloud on demand.  They do not buy a copy of the work.  To make a living with these streaming services you will have to have 1 to 4 million songs streamed a month to reach $1,160.  These services need to be thought of like traditional radio where getting airplay leads to more sales of CDs and downloads, as well as getting people to attend your concerts.

A good combination of all these along with revenue from appearances is what it takes to "make it" in the music business today.

See the graph that shows all the various ways of getting your music to your fans and the profit you can make at:  http://www.informationisbeautiful.net/2010/how-much-do-music-artists-earn-online/

Singer Amy Winehouse was found dead today in her London apartment.  Winehouse, who is most famous for her 2006 hit "Rehab" had struggled with substance abuse for several years, gaining notoriety for her run-ins with the law, as well as her beautiful voice.  She will join a long list of artists who died at the age of 27 - Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin, and Kurt Cobain to name a few.  So common is this, that it's been called "The 27 Club."

There remains no official cause of death, although most are speculating a drug overdose for the troubled star who was taken long before her time.

Dave Rawlings and Gillian Welch, Marymoor Park...

David Rawlinds and Gillian Welch (Image by furtwangl via Wikipedia)

I first saw Gillian Welch and David Rawlings in a small bar in Florence, South Carolina. It was a rowdy place, pool hall in the back.  Gillian squeezed right past me a few times while they were getting ready for the show.

When the opening act came on, a local girl that was doing some recording in Nashville, the crowd gave her no leeway. They were loud, noisy, and the performance could barely be heard.  After her performance Gillian and David stepped onto the stage.  They took a few minutes to arrange their gear and get ready. Still no one was paying much attention.

Then they began to play.  Just two acoustic guitars and Gillian singing.  The cacophony of the crowd dropped to a murmur then silence as her and David weaved their way through song after song.  I left impressed that a couple of people playing acoustic guitars could catch and hold a crowds attention so fast.

It comes as no surprise that Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 claimed the top spot at the box office this weekend, but what may be surprising is just how much it made.  With $169 million, it now holds the record of the highest grossing opening weekend of all time, beating out previous record holder The Dark Knight.  It easily blew past all earlier installments of the franchise, including Deathly Hallows Part 1, which made a still impressive $125 million.  This dramatic rise could have something to do with the cost of 3D and IMAX tickets, something no other Harry Potter film has utilized in the past.  Either way, I'm sure the movie has some more records to break before it's all said and done.

Fans are still piling in to see Michael Bay's Transformers: Dark of the Moon.  $21M this weekend brings its total to an astounding $302.9M since its opening 3 weeks ago.

Horrible Bosses, a comedy starring Jason Bateman, Charlie Day, and Jason Sudeikis, nabbed the third spot in the rankings after a $17.8M weekend brought the movie to $60.2M

I, along with most of the world, have been waiting for this movie for 10 years.  Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows was split into two movies, one released last November, and the second half released Thursday night.  AMC Theatres was doing a double feature, so I decided to dress like Hermione and go to the theatre and watch both movies back to back.  That was one of the best decisions I've ever made.

Space in Downtown Miami

Image by Dan Vidal via Wikipedia

You can have the greatest performance in the world but if you're  barely filling the house and activity at the bar is waning then your prospects of re-booking and higher revenue are slim.

Playing smaller venues may be the key.   Doing well in a small venue can keep your reputation from being damaged by an empty hall as you work your way up to bigger and better things.

Your best source of new work is re-booking.  So remember re-booking is all about the venue making money.  No money... your days are numbered.

Michael Bay on the set of Transformers (Public Domain mage via Wikipedia)

Transformers 3 is a certified blockbuster, raking in more than $204 million so far in the US alone.  After public outrage over Transformers 2, a film most fans thought was just not up to par, Michael Bay and the crew had a lot to live up to.  He lost Megan Fox (thus began an epic war of the words between the 2) and did his best to try and live up the expectations the original Transformers film set.  With that said, the best Michael Bay could do was still not very impressive.

Synopsis: The Autobots battle the Decepticons... again.

I lived in Asheville for several years, and nothing captured my attention more than the Montford Park Players, an acting company that performs free shows written and inspired by the works of William Shakespeare in an outdoor amphitheater all summer long.  With fantastic actors and direction, it truly is one of the most interesting activities to do in a city full of interesting activities.

They are currently looking for directors for their productions of Romeo And Juliet, as well as A Christmas Carol that will be shown in October and December, respectively.  If interested, you can contact John Russell at 828-254-5146 or info@montfordparkplayers.org

For all future shows, a director's application can be found here: http://www.montfordparkplayers.org/join-the-theatre/director-applications/

The most current show, All's Well That Ends Well - Not A Love Story, will be playing from July 8-31 at the Hazel Robinson Amphitheater.

Since all shows are free, the company runs on volunteers and donations.  You can make your donations on the website http://www.montfordparkplayers.org/support-the-theatre/

Sophia Takal: Making "Green"

Hiroshige A green valley with trees

Image via Wikipedia

"Green" is the directorial debut for writer and actress Sophia Takal.  It involves two women and a man on a weekend trip in the country and the jealousy the situation presents.

This is a well done low budget film.  In the independent spirit it was conceived and written in a short period of time, shot in two weeks, with editing done at home and the dialogue added in her bedroom studio.

Takal acted in the movie too!  Along with her fiance' Lawrence Michael Levine and their roommate Kate Lyn Sheil.  Also a filmmaker, Lawrence provided support to Sophia along the way.   Kate is an actress as well so having all that talent under one roof was definitely an asset.

Can great movies be made on a shoestring?  Sure!  Sophia Takal proves it.  She won the Chicken & Egg Emergent Narrative Woman Award at the South by Southwest Film Festival in 2011.

Why are actors so willing and anxious to work with certain directors such as Terrence Mallick, Quentin Tarantino, and Woody Allen?  It's not the pay, but maybe the payoff.  For instance Quentin Tarantino revived John Travolta's career with Pulp Fiction.   Also, as an actor, it rounds out your list of credits to have worked with these highly regarded directors.  If you've worked with them, your place in cinematic history is elevated.

Read this article where Jane Graham ask's why A-List actors such as Brad Pitt, Christian Bale, and Scarlett Johansson are are always eager to work for the directors they admire.

Michael Bay on the set of Transformers (Public Domain image via Wikipedia)

The Fourth of July weekend has been good to the Transformers movies in the past, and this year is no different.  The 3rd installment, Transformers: Dark of the Moon, opened in 3D and Imax this past Tuesday night.  The film had a lot of skepticism following it after fans and critics panned Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen.  Despite tons of controversy, including a Michael Bay/Megan Fox feud that led to her being replaced by another beauty, the movie grossed $97.5M over the weekend, making its 5-day total $165.2M, a stronger start than the previous two films.

Disney/Pixar's Cars 2 is now at $117M after a fairly strong $26.2M for its second week.  The G-rated animated film stars Larry the Cable Guy and Owen Wilson as friends going abroad for an international car race.

Rounding out the top 3, is the Cameron Diaz/Jason Segel comedy Bad Teacher, following an irresponsible and uninterested teacher (Diaz) as she attempts to raise test scores to get a bonus she can use to get new breast implants.

Looking to get an acting job?  You must have a good headshot and acting resume'.   Here are a couple of clips about each.

When it comes to headshots there are two different camps.  One that says that the image should be plain and simple so the director or casting agent can see you as a blank slate and project the role onto you.  The other says that they can change your look and what the director wants to know is who is this person and what their personality is like.

In fhte first clip Chris Frampton, a commercial photographer,  shows some examples of headshots and explains the need to project your persoality in your headshots.

The second clip is about the basics of writing a resume' from actor and writer Richard Rifkin.

The Rogersville Playhouse in Rogersville, Tennessee is holding auditions for Avenue Q, a musical by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx inspired by the book of the same name by Jeff Whitty.  A coming of age story about the anxieties of entering adulthood.

Actors must be 18 years or older due to adult language and content in the musical.

Roles:

  • Princeton - fresh faced new kid on the block. He's looking for his purpose in life and develops a crush on Kate Monster in the meantime.
  • Kate Monster - she's kind of pretty, and pretty damn smart. A kindergarten teacher's assistant, she's looking for the man of her monster dreams.
  • Rod - a Republican investment banker with a secret. He's got an imaginary girlfriend who lives in Canada.
  • Nicky - Rod's best friend and roommate. A sweet-natured slacker.
  • Brian - 32-year old small time comedian who apparently doesn't like to wear underwear when working at the Around the Clock Cafe. His comedy act doesn't pay all the bills so he's looking for a steady job. Engaged to Christmas Eve.
  • Christmas Eve - Brian's girlfriend and wife to be. A witty, painfully earnest Japanese therapist with some peculiar ideas about relationships. Apparently, the more you ruv someone, the more you want to kirr him.
  • Trekkie Monster - a rude and grotesque sociopath who seldomly leaves his apartment, he makes a lot of money investing in Internet porn.
  • Lucy T. Slut - the star of Girls Gone Wild parts 2, 5 and 7, she's back from a prestigious tour (Amsterdam, Bangkok and Celebration, Florida) to sing at the Around the Clock Cafe and prey on Princeton.
  • The Bad Idea Bears - viciously dangerous little critters whose only purpose in life is giving very bad advice.  They find their true calling when they join Scientology.
  • Gary Coleman - former child star of TV's Diff'rent Strokes, he made a lot of money that got stolen by his folks. Now he's the superintendent on Avenue Q. It sucks to be him.
