Carolina Chocolate Drops

I've been hearing a lot lately about the Carolina Chocolate Drops, a jig band from Durham, North Carolina.

Originally they had three members Rhiannon Giddens, Dom Flemons, and Justin Robinson but the group has now grown to four members.  Justin Robinson left the band while Adam matta and Hubby Jenkins were added.

The members switch up on the instruments they play during a performance and their songs may include banjo, guitar, fiddle, jug, harmonica, kazoo, snare drum, bones, beatbox, quills and tamborine.  You see they play traditional music from the Piedmont region of North and South Carolina.  Even though they play traditional music they claim to be modern musicians with their own twist on the old melodies.

Much of what they include in their repertoire came from Joe Thompson, an 80 year old black fiddle player from Mebane, North Carolina.  Joe, who learned the tunes himself sitting on the porch after a day of working in the field passed the tunes on to a new generation through Dom, Rhiannon, and Justin who went to his house on a weekly basis to learn the songs.

Here is an episode of Film Riot where Ryan Connolly uses the GoPro Hero camera for underwater filming so that he doesn't risk getting his expensive 5D camera wet.  The video shows how to get bullet shot effects underwater.

The GoPro Hero is great for things like this because it is relatively inexpensive ($180-$300), shoots 1080p, and comes with a waterproof housing and headstrap mount.  It's small size makes it easy to use with a chest mount harness or head strap mount.  In fact GoPro has mounts for helmets, surfboards, bikes, and rollbars as well as suction cup and adhesive mounts when nothing else works.

Review: "Dakota Skye"

Recently a friend handed me a copy of Dakota Skye and insisted I watch it, and since I had 89 minutes to spare, I decided to give it a shot.  The movie focuses on an unmotivated 17 year-old girl who begins the film by revealing that she has a superpower - she can see the truth even when people are lying.  Armed with this superpower she goes on to deal with an apathetic boyfriend more focused on getting high and playing in his band than being with Dakota.  At the same time, she's got friends she barely likes forcing her to study for the upcoming SATs and a cute, new guy who can't help but notice how unappreciated she is.  This new guy happens to be her boyfriend's best friend, which makes this the central conflict of the movie.

For the most part, it's a normal teen movie about a girl and a guy breaking up, getting together, etc, but it is also filled with beautiful shots and perfect dialogue.  Eileen Boylan also does a phenomenal job in her first starring role.  Director John Humber made his directorial debut after spending the past 7 years as a Production Assistant on various films and even just acting as an assistant to stars like Orlando Bloom.  Film festivals in 2008 seemed to notice it as well.  It won Best Film at the Charlotte Film Festival and First Glance Film Fest, as well as Best Screenplay in the Phoenix Film Festival.   Dakota Skye is an incredibly well-made and well-written micro-budget movie shot for only $150,000. So, if you were looking for something new on Netflix, I highly suggest this.

Charlotte Hornsby, a native off Charlottesville, Virginia is looking for actors to be in her student film One If By Land.  Filming will be in the Charlottesville and Williamsburg areas September 8th through 15th.

This is a senior thesis project for Charlotte and is a story about an aspiring historical reenactor  and his beleaguered family.  These are unpaid parts but give you a chance to appear in a New York University short film.  The roles will take one or two days of rehearsal and one day of shooting.

VIVIAN DOE (late 30s early 40s): Vivian is an overworked and sleep-deprived mom who feels all the logistics of child-raising have fallen to her. Her husband has a hard time keeping appointments and admitting when he's forgotten and Vivian feels she has to take on more than her share or nothing will get done. The scene follows Vivian as she leaves in the middle of her pilates class because Benton has forgotten to pick their son up from school.

PAT BELYLE (mid-late 40s): Pat is the head of community relations at the Williamsburg Visitor's Center. He has the social ease and courteous vocabulary of a successful administrator. He's an accessible and fairly down-to-earth man, but his practicality is his best asset and he has a tough time sympathizing with emotional clients.

BUS DRIVER (40s-50s): Male or female, this seasoned school bus driver is ready to weather anything. Though the driver has a tough exterior and sometimes intimidates kids with his/her gruff attitude, he/she takes pity on the main character when no one shows up for his class's field trip.

Remember, your job is to bring in people to your gigs and keep them entertained.  This equates to more revenue for the venue.  The more people you attract and the more fun they have the more money they are likely to make. The more money they make the more likely they are to book you again.

The venue has responsibilities to you as well to help you achieve this goal.  Don't let them take advantage of you.  Make sure that at the end of the day you've gotten everything you expected.

Carolina Legends: Earl Owensby

Earl Owensby - Challenge.jpgEarl Owensby's first film as a producer was the movie Challenge (1974)  which became a hit in the U.S. and abroad.   In it Owensby  played the lead role of Frank Challenge, a Senate candidate that would not sell out to the mob.  This was the spark that eventually led to the creation of Earl Owensby Studios in Shelby, North Carolina.

A number of films were shot at his studios and he starred in many of them.  Some of the people that were cast in his movies include David Allan Coe (singer/songwriter) , Lorne Greene (from the Bonanza TV series), and Paula PoundStone (comedian).

There are many writers, actors, and crew members that got their start in Owensby's studios and have gone on to make a name for themselves in the film industry.  One of them is Leon Rippy, a native of Rock Hill, South Carolina best known for his roles in The Patriot, Stargate, and Saving Grace who did several movies with Earl in his early days as an actor.

In the 80s Duke Power Company's Cherokee Power Station , a nuclear power plant being built in Gaffney, South Carolina was never completed.  Earl bought the abandoned plant and created what was at the time the world's largest underwater sound stage.   This is where James Careron's movie The Abyss was filmed.

"Earl Owensby has received numerous honors for his success and achievements. Honors granted Mr. Owensby include NC Hall Of Fame, #15 of the top 100 people in NC in 100 years, Award UNCC North Carolina, and numerous others. Many schools and Universities refer to Earl Owensby when teaching the movie industry, specifically, classes at Duke University, Gardner Webb University, as well as a section in the North Carolina History Books."

Earl Owensby Studios is still in operation and has sound stages totaling 90 thousand square feet.   They have an underwater filming pool with 7 camera ports and underwater lighting, makeup and dressing rooms, wardrobe and property departments, carpentry shop, special effects, kitchen, dining, and lounge areas.  Also an onsite hotel,  1570' runway, recording/mixing studio, editing  and screening rooms, and production offices.

children's day

Considering allowing you child become a paid actor?  Make sure it's for the right reason.  Most child actors don't make very much money.  If the child is genuinely interested in acting and has a desire to learn, it can be a good thing.

.It has it's costs too.  Headshots and acting classes aren't cheap.   If your child likes to act and you can support them in their interest the benefits can make it worthwhile.  Acting can help round them out intellectually, emotionally, and prepare them for situations later in life.  Just don't overdo it.

Read this article by Sarah Lindenfeld Hall that has a video of Terri Dollar of Kids Unlimited Talent Agency in Raleigh, North Carolina speaking about the subject.  Terri gives some good advice on what to expect and what to watch out for when your child becomes involved in acting.

Make a Film on a Micro Budget

Here's a video by Drew Wilson with some great tips on making a film on a small budget.  Interestingly it says not to use your friends as they don't take direction very well.  You may be able to get actors cheap or free by giving them film credit but remember, you have to feed them!

First the tips:

J-24 yacht racing, Sydney Harbour, Australia

Yacht Club, a feature length comedy, is casting for 26 speaking roles and hundreds of extras.  Don't know much about this yet.  From the sound of it I'm imagining Caddyshack at the harbor.  The movie is scheduled for release in 2013.

They are also attempting to create the world's largest virtual yacht club online by getting people to register online in order to be considered for the movie.  The fee is $50 and they are looking for people that love sailing and have some stories to tell about their sailing adventures and life around the yacht club.  I wouldn't suggest paying money in an attempt to get a role but if you already like sailing and talking it up with other members of the yacht club them maybe it's not a bad thing.

The search began at the 56th Annual Beaufort Water Festival in Beaufort, South Carolina and will continue at many of the major boat shows and boating events throughout the country (Planned Events).  At these events you will be given an opportunity to shoot a casting video.

Weekend Box Office - August 1

Harrison Ford at the Pacific Design Center in ...

Harrison Ford (Photo by Gavatron via Wikipedia)

The two films opening in the lead at the box office this weekend were probably as different as two movies could be.  Cowboys and Aliens is a sci-fi western flick with action stars Harrison Ford and Daniel Craig, and The Smurfs is a part animated/part live action movie about The Smurfs leaving their magical world and ending up in New York City.  They made $36.4M and $35.6M, with Cowboys narrowly taking the top spot. Crazy, Stupid, Love, a romantic comedy starring Steve Carrell and Ryan Gosling also opening this weekend, took the 5th spot with $19.1M.

Captain America: The First Avenger and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 remained in the top 5 this weekend with Captain America pulling in $25.6M (bringing its total to $117.4M) and Harry Potter with $22M (bringing its total to $318.5M).  With that total, Harry Potter has broken even more records.  It has now reached the $1 billion mark for worldwide totals, become the highest grossing Potter film, and become the fastest film ever to reach $900M.

Rounding out the top 10:
Friends With Benefits - $9.3M, bringing it to $38.2M total
Horrible Bosses - $7.2M, bringing it to $96.3M total
Transformers: Dark of the Moon - $6.1M, bringing it to $338M total
Zookeeper - $4.3M, bringing it to $68.8M total
Cars 2 - $2.3M, bringing it to $182M total

So relax and let them see the qualities you have that will make you a good choice for the series.

MTV's Times Square studio

MTV - Times Square (mage via Wikipedia)

How can a network that calls itself MTV aka Music Television wind up playing so little music?  It was a slow process it seems, like the waves of a riverbank lapping away at the shoreline until one tree after another falls into the muddy water.

It started out with music videos being played back to back interlaced with VJs (video jockeys) telling about music news.  Except for the commercials everything related to music.  Great concept.  Marketing crept in and then the reality shows so that now, to actually see a music clip, you may have to wait an hour or more.

The result,  MTV is no longer Music TV.
