Kindle Fire Announced by Amazon

The Kindle Fire has been announced by Amazon and I think it's sure to be a hit.  For $199 you get a 7 inch easily carried color browser and e-reader.  Access to 18 million movies, TV shows, songs, magazines, and books through the Amazon service and Amazon Prime members will receive unlimited, instant streaming of 10 thousand plus movies and TV Shows.

It comes with free cloud storage for all of your Amazon content, a dual core processor, and a free month of Amazon Prime.  At 14.6 ounces it's easy to manage and hold with one hand.  The battery life is adequate with up to 8 hours of continuous reading or 7.5 hours of video playback when the wireless service is switched off.  Using wireless does drain the battery faster  so when you're browsing the Internet the battery life will diminish but should still be reasonble for a device of this type.

I will be using this device for books and videos that I've already downloaded so I will have the wireless off and be using it whenever I have a moment to catch up on some reading or in bed before I go to sleep.  I won't be needing the wireless for that and will save my battery.  If I do want to check the web for something I'll just switch the wireless back on and start browsing.

Access to over 17 million songs in the Amazon MP3 store is available as well for listening on the go.  You can check your email through a built in email app that puts your Gmail, Yahoo!, Hotmail, AOL, etc.. messages into a single inbox.  Download your favorite apps from the Amazon Appstore which has thousands of apps and games.  There are sure to be apps coming that will be handy for filmmakers and photographers alike.

The thing I'm really excited about is keeping this near the chair where I watch TV and movies.  It never fails that when I'm watching something, I have things related to what I'm viewing that I want to look up on the Internet.  Currently I keep my laptop near but it is a little unwieldy to handle easily for a quick grab to see what actors are in this movie and what other films have they been in.  The Kindle Fire will fit in nicely for this purpose.

The movie is being produced by DW Films and will be released by Walt Disney Pictures.  Robert Downey, Jr. who has played the role in previous Iron Man movies is set to play Tony Stark aka Iron Man.  Scarlett Johansson is rumored to be in the movie as well.

Review: Drive

Ryan Gosling is, hands down, one of my favorite actors in Hollywood.  Having said that, I didn't care at all about Drive when I heard about it.  I'm not into movies about cars and shootouts; that's all just boring to me.  But when I went to see it I was blown away.  Set in Los Angeles, the movie follows Ryan Gosling's character, a mechanic/stuntman/wheel man.  Gosling (who is only referred to as "the driver" through the entire movie) starts falling for his neighbor  Irene (Carey Mulligan) before finding out that she is married to an ex-con who is involved in some pretty dangerous stuff.  Driver does his best to protect her, which means helping her husband pay off some debts he owes.

The movie is over the top, yet minimalistic.  It's extremely violent, but still sweet.  There is an amazing soundtrack that pays homage to the 80's perfectly.  Hopefully word of mouth gets this film and director Nicolas Winding Refn the credit they deserve.

Netflix has split their DVD service and their movie streaming service into two different entities and websites.  The website will now be for the streaming service and will be for mail order DVD rentals.

Charges for the two services will appear separately on your bill as well but if you're already subscribing to both DVD and streaming services the total will be the same.

Netflix customers recently expressed their dissatisfaction of the price increase that came recently when they separated the pricing for the two services.  They have apologized and explained that the two services have become two different businesses with different cost structures and marketing needs.

In the video below Reed Hastings (CEO and co-founder of Netflix) and Andy Rendich (CEO of Qwikster) tell why the separation was necessary.

The Arts Center of Coastal Carolina is holding auditions for The Drowsy Chaperone, a musical within a comedy.  An homage to musicals of the Jazz Age.

  • Man in Chair: Musical theater enthusiast. Neurotic, precise, mischievous, passionate. Ideally, think Tony Randall 30 years ago.
  • Janet Van de Graaff, the Bride: 20s - early 30s. Leggy young leading lady. Actress in this role should be a strong dancer. Acrobatic and any other bizarre skills a plus. Character is right out of a 1930s movie; a real movie star from the golden age. Sings G3 to Eb, with power.
  • Robert Martin, the Groom: 20s-30s. Movie-star good looks, with athletic build. Very charming, with a big smile and small brain; a deeply superficial person. Actor in this role should be a good song-and-dance man with strong tap skills, and must be comfortable on roller skates. Sings C3 to Ab4.
  • Underling the Butler: Middle-aged or older. Mrs. Tottendale's butler and comic partner. Very much the droll, refined British butler. More worldly-wise than his employer, but extremely devoted to her. Actor should have great comic skills able be able to tolerate a spit-take or two. Tap skills a plus. Sings Ab3 - Eb5.
  • Aldolpho:  Man, approximately 30s - 40s. "Latin lover" type; cross between Cesar Romero and Desi Arnaz. Hysterically funny, over-the-top Latin accent, complete with trilled "r"s. Needs great physical comedy skills and strong vocal control. Chews scenery for breakfast. Rich bass/baritone, A#2 to G4, with falsetto.
  • George, the Best Man:  40s. Shorter, character look; a regular guy-type. Very energetic and goal-oriented; a heart attack waiting to happen. Straight man to the groom. Excellent tap dancer preferred. Sings F3 to Bb4.
  • Kitty, a Chorine:  Late 20s-30s. Dumb but sweet chorus girl who wants to be the leading lady. Real Judy Holliday type. Has been around block, but still gets lost. Has the dumbest jokes in show, and must be able to pull them off. She and Feldzieg have a real Burns-&-Allen thing going on. Actress must be a strong dancer. Must belt; Bb3 to F5.
  • Trix:  Woman, late 20s - late 30s. The somewhat "butch" 1920s autopilot who saves the day and flies the company off to Rio. Ab3-Eb5, belter.
  • The Tall Brothers:  Two men, 30s-40s. No taller than 5'8". Former Vaudeville brother act, cast as gangsters, disguised as pastry chefs. Real tough-guy look and style, which is made humorous by the fact that they are short in stature. Looking for strong dancers, acrobatics a plus. Character baritones.

What does it take to get a breathtaking slow motion video?  A super fast camera like the Phantom Flex.

When a camera records video at a fast rate and then the same film is played back at a normal speed, voilà you have slow motion video.

The Phantom Flex by Vision Research, Inc. can shoot up to 2,570 frames per second of 1920 x 1080 HD video.  When you play this back at 30 frames per second the results are amazing.

Check out this film Locked in a Vegas Hotel Room with a Phantom Flex by Tom Guilmette shot at 2,564 fps to 1080p.

Holding a Casting Call

Need actors for you film or theater production?  Unless it's friends only or you're using a casting agency then you'll need to conduct a casting call.  This can be done online by having actors submit headshots, resume's, and videos of themselves where you can select the people you want to come to the audition or by having an open casting call where anyone can come to audition.

First you'll need to consider a place to hold the casting call.  A nice place with ample room for the actors being interviewed and space for those that will be waiting.  Malls and hotels work well for this purpose as no one has to wait outside. For a stage production  a theater is a good option.  If you're on a budget then maybe a community center, church, or space at a school might work for you.

Next you will need to send out notices far enough in advance so that the actors have a chance to plan for the audition.  Send the notice to newspapers, trade papers, and websites like this one that list casting notices.  In the notices be sure to include the name of the project the audition is for, where the audition will be (full address), and what time it will begin. Also a checklist of things the actors need to know or bring to prepare for the audition.

Put an email address and phone number where you can be reached so that anyone that has questions can contact you.   In some cases you may want the applicants to contact you to arrange an audition time to make things more orderly.  This also gives you an idea of what to expect on the day of the audition.

Burning Man

Participants in the Burning Man Project are doers.  They are intent on doing something or building something no matter how bizarre or outlandish it may be.  Is this theater? I think so.  Maybe not in the traditional sense.  The entire event is a celebration.

Burning Man 2011 just wrapped up this weekend in Nevada's Black Rock Desert leaving no trace that they have been there.  Part work and part play, participants put on shows, build buildings, and erect sculptures celebrating self-expression and self-reliance.  In the end it's all torn down and moved  out leaving the desert as it was found.

No commercialism here.  You won't see any ad campaigns, logos, or brand names.  There are few things that you can purchase beyond  ice and coffee. You must bring your own water.  Burners have to rely on each other.  Getting around  on the playa (Spanish for the beach) consists of bicycles and mutant vehicles which are as much art as they are transportation.

100% participant staffed and funded. There is no "they" at this event, only "us." No one will clean up your mess, you must do it.  Again self-reliance for those who like to "do...."

Virgin Mobile Freefest is based on the premise of giving back to the community.  Though it is basically a free music festival they do take donations and accept volunteer work.  In the past two years they have raised $300,000 for youth homelessness, had 55,000 hours of volunteer time, and created 10,000 outreach kits.  Donations help secure outreach services and shelter for homeless youth through their RE*Generation program.

As of this writing all of the free tickets are free'd out but there are still a couple of ways to get them.  One is to be a volunteer.  Virgin Mobile has partnered with homeless youth organizations across the country that need your support.  The other way is to purchase a Fan E-Pak.  This includes a ticket, a donation to youth homelessness,  a limited edition festival t-shirt, early admission to the festival, and a souvenir cup that comes with a $1 discount on domestic draft beer  and fountain sodas at the festival.
