UP CLOSE ~ OZZY OSBOURNE

Ozzy Osbourne, Prince of Darkness, at the I Am...

Kristy Marett is a singer, entertainer, and onwer of Arts and Expressions - One Place For All Your Artistic Expressions!

In honor of HALLOWEEN, an UP CLOSE tribute to the man who possibly started it all!

Ozzy Osbourne is as popular today as he ever was, (maybe even more). A heavy metal icon who is adored by school children AND their grandparents, with a musical career that has spanned more than 40 years! Not too many artists can boast such a broad and diverse fan base, particularly considering the Ozzy persona of 'crazy-bad-boy'. Or maybe that's a part of the appeal!

Born John Michael Osbourne, (Ozzy picked up the nickname in school,) rose to fame as the lead singer and front man for the English heavy metal band, BLACK SABBATH, whose debut album was released in 1970. The band's sound was radically different, and helped spawn the heavy metal genre, and Osbourne was later dubbed "The Godfather of Heavy Metal".  (Thanks Ozzy!!)

To date, Ozzy has sold over 100 million albums worldwide as a solo artist and as a member of Black Sabbath. Early on,  for Black Sabbath, albums, Paranoid and Master of Reality, enjoyed fabulous success worldwide.

Osbourne left Black Sabbath in 1978 for three months to pursue interest in a solo project he called Blizzard of Ozz, but returned just months later. Then, Ozzy was fired from Black Sabbath 1979. Ozzy himself reports that the causes were mainly due to 'all the drugs', not just his own partaking, but everyone in the band.

North Carolina Governor Bev Perdue (Public Domain Image via Wikipedia)

North Carolina Governor Bev Perdue has officially announced that through incentives offered to the producers, the production of Iron Man 3 is coming to North Carolina.   This will bring more than 80 million dollars, over 500 jobs, and more than 1,000 talent opportunities for actors and extras.

Perdue said that it was a competitive process and they worked hard to beat out the other states that wanted the film.  The incentives package North Carolina was able to offer made the difference in landing the movie.  The resources and talent pool available in North Carolina was also a big factor in the decision.  It will be shot in Wilmington at the EUE/Screen Gems Studio and will be the largest production that has ever been filmed in North Carolina.

The Governor said that it's not just about Wilmington and that North Carolina has had it's busiest year ever in the film industry.  During 2011, in films across the state there were  3,400 crew positions, 560 acting jobs, 22,000 extra jobs, 2,342 production days and over 200 million dollars of direct spend in film business.  That is a 185% increase over 2010.

She also said "We're not done yet." and is working along with her commerce team to attract more productions to North Carolina.

"America knows that North Carolina is serious about film, and Marvel Studios understands this is the best place in the country to do film business."

Marvel Studios has one of the hottest franchises in the country with the Iron Man series.  The film will be distributed by Walt Disney Pictures and stars Scarlett Johansson, Don Cheadle, and Robert Downey, Jr.

Shot of singer and bassist in recording studio

Here's a site and a recording studio that records one band a day, every day and puts the songs and/or videos up on it's web site.  Based in Rock Island, Illinois, the sessions are free for whatever band is passing through and has made arrangements with the Daytrotter staff.   A session lasts for a couple of hours and is something like live recording in that there are no overdubs or re-takes.  What you do is what you get.  Like the old days before multi-track recorders.

Check out the video below to get an idea about how this concept works and also visit their website to see the content they've produced.

The Lester Bangs

The Lester Bangs, a band out of Rock Hill, South Carolina, are playing shows and taking names. Though being together only around 8 months, these guys are trying to take the Carolinas by storm. Booking shows in Spartanburg, Myrtle Beach and Columbia, these punks aren't letting location stop them from having fans all over the state. Using any available outlet, Lester Bangs just wants to play fast, loud, and anywhere with pizza (just ask them about the stipulations!).

The Band of Oz

Raleigh, NC

The Band of Oz, the popular Beach Music band, has been "keeping the sand in the shoes"of the shaggers since 1967, and is still as popular as ever!

If you live outside the Carolinas, you might be asking, "What is Beach Music?" and "Who are Shaggers?"

"Beach Music is a regional genre that evolved in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The genre first came about in the 1930's, and over the years, the musical style and the accompanying dance, The Shag, (a style of swing dance,) blossomed into one of the most popular musical styles in the south and beyond. The Shag is the official South Carolina State Dance! A 4/4 "blues shuffle" rhythmic structure and moderate-to-fast tempo defines the style makes it the most popular music for the shag.

Filmmaker, director, and screenwriter Thomas L. Phillips will be having a weekend workshop on indie filmmaking in Charlotte, NC for two days in November.

Here is what Thomas is offering in this workshop:

"During this two day hands on workshop we will go over all the essentials of filming. Pre-Production, Post-Production, casting, lighting, paperwork, contracts, screenwriting, cinematography, equipment, cameras, casting, working with actors.

There will be equipment on hand to play with and gets your hands dirty, cause as stated this will be hands on and not just you sitting and listening to someone yammer for hours. The only way to learn is by doing.

I have been successful in this business for over a decade, working as a screenwriter, editor, director, producer and cinematographer, casting director, etc. Come and learn from someone that know the ins and out of the business, and there are many. I will not sugar coat it, tell lies and make everything seem like a dream.

This is a tough and ruthless business, that requires a backbone, dedication and a relentless drive.

You will walk away with know how experience, hands on experience and a better understanding of filmmaking in general."

The Austin Film Festival is unique, in that it will not only feature upcoming full-length films (like the highly anticipated Rum Diary, starring honoree Johnny Depp and George Clooney's The Descendants), but also a series of short films and beloved older films like Toy Story and Edward Scissorhands

The festival will actually kick off tonight with a film & food gala with guests Ryan Piers Williams and Alexis Bledel (Gilmore Girls, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants) before the screenings begin tomorrow.

Can't make it to Austin by tomorrow?  Well, neither can I, but you can get involved anyway!

Stay up to date on the events throughout the week by "liking" it on Facebook - http://www.facebook.com/AustinFilmFestival

Become a sponsor! Instructions can be found on the website  http://austinfilmfestival.com/new/sponsorship

Also, if you missed the deadline for submissions this year, keep checking for next year!  Send in your film or screenplay, apply for crew positions, or even volunteer.  Festivals like these run on the support of others, so do whatever you can to make sure that we get a 10th year from the Austin Film Festival.

Truckstop Preachers

From: Rock Hill, SC
Genre: Honky Tonk
Record Label: Lookout Mabel

Members: Nathan Palmer, Lee Goodwin, Glenn Jones, and Jeff Faulkner

If you have never seen the Truckstop Preachers live show, you are in for a real treat, and maybe even a surprise. Performing the tunes of their favorite country artists and including some of their own excellent
originals, "The Preachers" give audiences a lot more than just that good old, down-home feeling. They put on a REAL show!  Lead vocalist and front man, Nathan Palmer, keeps the band's lively performance on the cutting edge of entertainment throughout the set. But... the Truckstop Preachers are as talented as they are entertaining!

Here's a little clip from the band's web site:

"When today's country music is driven by cowboy wanna-be's and prom queens who couldn't cut it on MTV, Truckstop Preachers make it a point to deliver freight loads of raw honky tonk music to their audience.
It's this respect that has attracted a congregation of real music listeners to the Truckstop Preachers. Loyal country music listeners are attracted to the truthful song writing. At the same time, fans of hard driving rock anticipate a gritty rock driven beat that brings them out of their seats."

Truckstop Preachers originally formed as "4 on the Floor in 2001". They performed throughout the Carolinas. In 2004, still as "4 on the Floor", the band took their first album "Cowboys and Engines" to Europe, performing for thousands at festivals and in honky tonk venues.  In 2005, the band changed their name to Truckstop Preachers following the call they heard to deliver a message to "those sinning souls of today's country music".  The group's self-titled album, "Truckstop Preachers" with a live cut from one of their Bakersfield heroes, Buck Owens, made it to the Americana Top 50. Recently, the act has opened for national acts such as  Dwight Yoakam, Dale Watson, Southern Culture on the Skids, David Allan Coe, Kevn Kinney (Drivin and Crying), Cross Canadian Ragweed, and 38 Special.

UP CLOSE ~ Patrick Davis

Kristy Marett is a singer, entertainer, and onwer of Arts and Expressions - One Place For All Your Artistic Expressions!

Patrick Davis' pals kept telling him he should do this - that he makes music people want to hear, that his songs and his voice are radio-ready. And, so what? Thousands of people are told such things all the time by millions of well-intentioned friends.

Here's what's different: Patrick Davis' pals are some of the most influential artists coming out of Nashville and climbing the country charts. And they're eager for Patrick Davis to join their club."

(Excerpt from patrickdavismusic.com)

"Talent, youth, good looks and a natural gift for songwriting with the perfect hook, Patrick Davis has everything it takes to become the next mega-star, so we are keeping our eyes and ears open!

Emerging from Nashville with a string of hit songwriting credits already under his belt, Patrick began his solo-performing career with a jump-start. He co-wrote Jason Michael Carroll's Top 10 hit, "Where I'm From" as well as the closing track, "Be Wary of a Woman," on fellow South Carolinian Darius Rucker's (Hootie and the Blowfish) platinum-level Learn To Live album. These days, we can hear his songs, as well as his influence, on new albums from Lady Antebellum, Jewel (Patrick and Jewel co- wrote 11 of the 12 original songs on the album, and he sang harmony on the track, "Count On Me"), Josh Kelley and Carroll (as producer.)"

Since coming to Nashville in 2002, Davis has written with a wide range of country and pop music heavyweights, from Jewel and Dallas Davidson to Radney Foster, Hal Ketchum and Nashville Songwriters Hall-of-Fame Member Guy Clark (co-writing two songs on Clark's latest album.  Davis says he considers the collaboration with Clark a highlight in his career).

The cost to sign up with cdBaby in minimal.  $39 for a complete album or $9.99 for a single.  I have been a cdBaby member for years (http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/littledoc).  It has helped me spread my music far and wide as well as giving  the satisfaction of periodically receiving a check for CDs sold and royalties for plays on digital music sites.  I even had one song picked up for a movie as the producer had heard my songs at cdBaby.
