Michael Buble

Q:        Who has extraordinary musical talent, extraordinary good looks, extraordinary stage-presence as well as world renown, an extraordinary talent for turning classics into ultra-modern, an extraordinarily diverse fan-base, AND just came out with a Christmas album?

A:        YES! Michael Buble!

(Okay.... Big swoon!)

Michael Buble... he's the one with the silky voice, the one that hushes all women's conversations the moment one of his songs comes over the radio, the one who sells out every venue he books worldwide, the one who has the very best, youngest and hottest musicians around, both in studio and in his music videos... he's he one! (Move OVER, Frank Sinatra!)

Can't Kids and Elonzo play The Courtroom at Gettys

CK2.jpgThe Courtroom at Gettys in downtown Rock Hill isn't a new building or set up, but there's a whole new way to enjoy it. Mike Gentry heads the Courtroom where bands from all over come to play in an awesome setting with great acoustics where local music lovers come for a good time.

This past weekend  the Courtrooom, hosted Elonzo (Rock Hill, SC), Modern Man (Greenville, SC), Can't Kids (Columbia, SC) and Octopus Jones (Myrtle Beach, SC) with gusto!  This show was loud, as most of them are, with plenty of melodic songs, topped with great lyrics and each band's unique presence. The styles drifted from smooth Americana Folk Rock down through Grunge, Pop, New Wave, and almost any combo that your brain can fathom. A great mix of sounds, people and styles lead to a wonderful night and fantastic memories.

Don Dixon Image by The Queen's Hall via Flickr

Years ago I shared a tent with Don Dixon at Camp Springs near Great Falls, South Carolina.  I was just a kid of about 10-12 years old.  Don was a bit older.  Several years later in high school I played with a band called Stone Mountain out of Lancaster, Don's hometown.  Those cats were always mentioning this or that about Don Dixon and I remembered the name but never met him again.

Fast forward many years later and Don has made a name for himself as a producer, songwriter, and singer.  The next thing I heard  was he had co-produced  R.E.M.'s debut album Murmur.  After that he went on to produce another album for R.E.M. and has worked with the Smithereens, Joe Cocker, Fetchin' Bones, Hootie and the Blowfish, Mike Cross,  The Red Clay Ramblers, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Counting Crows, The Spongetones, and the list goes on.  He has also found time to work in film and theater.  He played an alcoholic director in the film Camp, and wrote songs selected for the soundtracks of the movie Heathers and  the movie Boys.   Don also appeared in the musical King Mackerel & the Blues Are Running: Songs & Stories of the North Carolina Coast  that he co-created with friends Bland Simpson and Jim Wann.

Threshold

Ask just about any new bride in the southeast, "Who's the best party band for a wedding reception?" and you will get the same answer: Threshold!

Hailing from Fort Mill, South Carolina, Threshold can be heard at parties, clubs and festivals all over the southeast. And anywhere they have played before, they will definitely play again! This fun, party band always has a full calendar, and unlike many of their peer acts, most of their bookings come from word of mouth!

Threshold.jpg

Threshold, the band, boasts some of the most talented and well-seasoned musicians the region has to offer, and the blend of all that talent pushes Threshold past the brink of excellence and distinction!

Auditions for To Kill A Mockingbird will be held at the first of December in Concord, North Carolina.  A play based on the book by Harper Lee about racial injustice and lost innocence.  Base on an event that happened near her hometown of Monroeville, Alabama  in the 1930s.

Roles:

SCOUT: a young girl about to experience the events that will shape the rest of her life, she should, ideally, seem as young as nine. She has such an important role to lay, however, that it will probably be necessary to cast an older girl in the part. Scout is courageous and forthright. If a question occurs to her, she'll ask it.

JEAN LOUISE: She's Scout, grown older, looking back on the time she was the young Scout, looking for answers to questions that still exist in her memory of that time. She isn't connected directly to the people in the play, though on occasion there's almost a communication between them. What is happening on stage is Jean Louise re-living the dramatic time of her youth in her mind. There should be a subtle suggestions about her appearance and manner that suggests Scout-grown older.

The Piedmont Triad Film Commission focuses on bringing film to the mountain foothills of North Carolina.  Very few areas are as picturesque as the rural areas of the North Carolina mountains.  A great location for filming and with the incentives North Carolina provides, a 25% tax rebate for films located here, it's easy on the budget.  There is also a large and well trained crew base in the Carolinas to draw talent from.

Most recently Hunger Games was filmed in Asheville and is sure to be a big hit when it's released early next year.  Other films that used the backdrop of North Carolina foothills, high country, and Piedmont areas are:  Leatherheads, Firestarter, Being There, The Color Purple, Deliverance, Dirty Dancing, Lolita, The Last of the Mohicans, Junebug, Nell, ... the list goes on and on.

We still speak of them as films but more often than not they are made digitally, rather than with actual film.  A few years ago with the emergence of digital cameras I thought they would be handy for consumers and reporters but the true artists would stick with film.  Fast forward a couple of years and all you could see in the photography magazines was digital equipment.  Now even Kodak is having trouble as film sales have plummeted and they scramble to find their way  in the digital world.

I guess it's the image that matters most though, not the medium, as even the artists have warmed up to the digital evolution.

I ran across this article by Roger Ebert about the demise of film.  Take a look.

Google music search Product Launch(March 30th ...

Google Music is here.  What do I like about it?  You never have to SYNC.  Just login to your account from any device and there's your music ready to play or download.  Whatever you purchase goes directly into your music library and is available on your computer, smartphone, tablet, etc...  If you're going to be out of reach of the Internet you can download songs to your phone for offline playback.  You can also upload up to 20 thousand of your current songs to your Google library for free.

It was easy to get started.  Since I already had a Google account I was able to login instantly and purchase a song.  Every day you can find a number of songs available for free download so you can try out music from artists you may not have considered before.  I chose a song from the Decemberists. The song was immediately available on my desktop.  Next I installed the Google Music app on my smartphone.  The installation was easy.  It did take several minutes before the song appeared in the song list of my phone.

Next I installed the Google Music Manager on my desktop.  Be careful. If you don't want it to upload all the songs on your computer be sure and select the right options for folder and automatic upload.  It started uploading everything in my music folder.  Not what I wanted.  I didn't care for everything I have being in the cloud so I created a folder named  "Google Music" in the music  folder so that only those songs would be uploaded and selected that folder to be the upload folder. Now only the things  I copy into the "Google Music" folder will be uploaded.  Problem solved.

I use Spotify and use it like a radio for listening to random music of the types I like.  I think Google Music is a great too.  Especially for people that like to own their music library.  You can download your purchased songs to your computer, upload the songs you already have from other services, and have them in the cloud for listening wherever you may be.

The Harris Brothers

Traditional Appalachian Music Meets Modern Appalachian Music! That's the Harris Brother's sound.  With their mix of numerous musical styles, which includes a heavy dollop of what flatlanders call Americana, The Harris Brothers create a resonance that is at once traditional and innovative. Add their pure musical style and onstage chemistry, and you can see how the duo has built one of the strongest fan bases in their area. The brothers can be heard at parties, taverns and music festivals ranging western North Carolina and beyond. Once you experience their captivating show, you want to come back for more. Their repertoire includes originals as well as old favorites, spiced with their own Harris Brothers flavor.

Since it's inception in 1998, Little Big Town has been steadily climbing on a straight road to stardom! A 'modern country' music vocal group, Little Big Town owes a great part of their ever-increasing success to their fresh, yet classic style and the vocal talent and versatility of its members, with members, Karen Fairchild, Kimberly Schlapman, Jimi Westbrook, and Phillip Sweet, alternating as lead singers and all contributing to the band's signature four-part harmonies. Westbrook and Sweet also play rhythm guitar.
