Here's an example of a movie exceeding expectations in popularity and attendance in spite of all the obstacles in it's way.

Bonnie and Clyde, produced in 1967 by Warren Beaty and directed by Arthur Penn was not a popular project in Jack Warner's eyes for the Warner Brother's studios.

Not expected to do well it was filmed in three months with a budget of $2.5 million.  Upon completion Warner Brothers only gave it a limited regional release.  The movie went on to gross more than $70 million worldwide and made a lot of money for Warren Beaty as actor and producer since his deal was 40% of the gross.
