Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival

Coming up next weekend will be the first of two Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festivals.  Starting this year there will be two festivals held on consecutive weekends. It's so popular they're holding it twice!

Some of the acts that are scheduled to perform are the Black Keys, Mazzy Star, Radio Head, Bon Iver, The Shins, SBTRKT, Zeds Dead, We Were Promised Jet Packs, Dr. Dre & Snoop Dogg, Florence the Machine, Girl Talk, and many, many more..

Besides all the great acts there will be plenty of good food and drink to choose from.  Need a quick bite?  There will be food trucks available.  Want something more relaxed and satisfying then go to one of the several restaurants or bars setup on the site.

Most of the tickets are sold out but there are a few premium camping passes left.  For those of you that can't be there in person you can watch the live stream on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/user/coachella/live



Zia Record Exchange will be open during the festival so you can purchase new or used records and CDs.  Record Store Day will feature special releases, and artist signings will be available. in the Zia tent.

Film, music, and interactive are the three main ingredients of this conference and festival located in the heart of Texas.  Austin will host thousands of fans over the course of it's 10 day run.

Portland Early Music Festival - Maine

What is an early music festival?  It's a place to hear the type of music that was once played in the courts and salons of 16th, 17th, and 18th century Europe.  The 1st Annual Portland Early Music Festival will be celebrating this sort of music this weekend in Portland, Maine.

There will master classes, workshops, and lectures as well as the music.  


Schedule:
  • Friday, 7:30pm: "An Age of Ayres," Songs of 17th Century England and France. An ayre is an English lute accompanied song and was a popular genre of the late 16th and early 17th centuries.
  • Saturday, 1pm-5pm and Sunday, 1:30pm: Workshops and Lectures
  • Saturday, 7:30pm: "Ein Sachsisches Programm," or "Mostly Saxon Program." J.S. Bach and S.L. Weiss finished their careers in Electoral Saxony, whose capital was Dresden, one of the 18th century's finest musical establishments.
  • Sunday 2:30pm-3:30pm: Meet the Instruments.
  • Sunday 4:30pm: "The Soul of Italy," music from the birthplace of the Baroque by Frescobaldi, Kapsberger, Strozzi, and Storace. Concludes with selections from Vecchi's commedia dell'arte, L'Amfiparnaso.

Moogfest 2011 - Asheville, NC

Moogfest 2011 is coming to Asheville, North Carolina at the end of the month.  Moog lived and worked in Asheville for the last 30 years of his life so it's only fitting that the festival be held here.

Moogfest honors Dr. Robert Moog and his electronic inventions such as the Moog synthesizer which revolutionized musical performances and recordings in the 70s   Invented by Dr. Moog in the 50s the music synthesizer did not become well known until Wendy Carlos used it for her Switched On Bach album in 1968.  Next came groups like Kraftwerk and Yes. 

There will also be a Synth Art Show this year.  It will feature limited edition screen prints that were inspired by Bob Moog. A variety of styles from concert poster artists and graphics designers.  Wayne Coyne of The Flaming Lips will have a limited edition print for the show.  Also, Brian Eno will be showing his 77 Million Paintings exhibit throughout the weekend which is an evolving sound and music collection.

Tomorrow the Charlotte Sunset Jazz Festival will commence with an indoor concert at the Knight Theater and conclude with a free outdoor concert in Marshall Park on Saturday.

A festival that features local artists along with national acts from all over the U.S.   Earl Klugh will be the headliner this year along with Reggie Sullivan, Innertwyned, Buff Dillard, and The Brubakers.

Burning Man

Participants in the Burning Man Project are doers.  They are intent on doing something or building something no matter how bizarre or outlandish it may be.  Is this theater? I think so.  Maybe not in the traditional sense.  The entire event is a celebration.

Burning Man 2011 just wrapped up this weekend in Nevada's Black Rock Desert leaving no trace that they have been there.  Part work and part play, participants put on shows, build buildings, and erect sculptures celebrating self-expression and self-reliance.  In the end it's all torn down and moved  out leaving the desert as it was found.  

No commercialism here.  You won't see any ad campaigns, logos, or brand names.  There are few things that you can purchase beyond  ice and coffee. You must bring your own water.  Burners have to rely on each other.  Getting around  on the playa (Spanish for the beach) consists of bicycles and mutant vehicles which are as much art as they are transportation.

100% participant staffed and funded. There is no "they" at this event, only "us." No one will clean up your mess, you must do it.  Again self-reliance for those who like to "do...."

This Saturday brings  the 6th Annual Jam on The Brandywine, an event that benefits the conservation of the Brandywine Watershed in the West Chester, Pennsylvania and Wilmington, Delaware areas.   The Brandywine Creek provides water for residents and industry as well as a place for recreation such as kayaking, canoeing, swimming,  and fishing, 

The event will be catered by Hickory House Catering and will have activities for children.  This is a BYOB event and there will also be beverages from Paradocx Vienyard and Starbucks.

Music Festival: Virgin Mobile Freefest - Maryland

Virgin Mobile Freefest is based on the premise of giving back to the community.  Though it is basically a free music festival they do take donations and accept volunteer work.  In the past two years they have raised $300,000 for youth homelessness, had 55,000 hours of volunteer time, and created 10,000 outreach kits.  Donations help secure outreach services and shelter for homeless youth through their RE*Generation program.

As of this writing all of the free tickets are free'd out but there are still a couple of ways to get them.  One is to be a volunteer.  Virgin Mobile has partnered with homeless youth organizations across the country that need your support.  The other way is to purchase a Fan E-Pak.  This includes a ticket, a donation to youth homelessness,  a limited edition festival t-shirt, early admission to the festival, and a souvenir cup that comes with a $1 discount on domestic draft beer  and fountain sodas at the festival.

It's a symphony of events for music lovers, showcasing national and local talent in multiple genres from Indie to Electronic, Metal to Hip Hop. Hear the music in a variety of the city's most interesting venues and outdoor settings.  See the music being made in music-related documentary and film screenings. 

Enjoy well-known artists in intimate settings, and discover plenty of local and break-out talent hand-selected by the festival's team of curators. Now in its second year, Philly F/M festival is a firework of creativity and activity, while keeping things affordable with an All-Access badge.

The second annual festival will take place over four days, largely in the Fishtown / Northern Liberties neighborhoods of Philadelphia, which in recent years have become a cultural center for music and arts in the city.  This year's festival will feature over 15 indoor and outdoor venues with capacities between 100-5,000. Participating venues include: The Festival Pier, Trocadero Theater, TLA, World Cafe Live and The
Ukie Club.

Music Festival: Outside Lands - San Francisco, CA

The Outside Lands festival will be held this weekend in San Francisco, California.  This festival includes music, food, wine and art.  Not you run of the mill fare but real tasty food and wine.  There will also be urban garden workshops at the event as well as fresh food at Farm Lands.  

Not sold?  Ride you bike to the festival and get free valet bike parking.  Esurance and the San Francisco Bike Coalition will have valets checking you bike in.  You can pick them up at the end of the day with your claims ticket. Free tire repair kits too.

The Minnesota Bluegrass & Old Time Music Festival will be held this weekend in Richmond, Minnesota.  This festival covers everything from novice beginner to the seasoned professional with workshops, showcases, and events for the family.

Some of the bands you will see are Dale Ann Bradley, Audie Blaylock & Redline, Sierra Hull & Highway 111, and April Verch.

There will be four main areas: Main Stage, Showcase Tent, Workshop Area, and the Family Area.  Additionally there will be several other areas such as the Young Talent Stage, Gathering Place, Market Place, and Ranch House Live.

The Newport Folk Festival begins this weekend in Newport, Rhode Island.  Known as one of the earliest folk festivals, from 1959, and for introducing Joan Baez and Bob Dylan as relatively unknown performers, the festival continues to this day.
